*Cast in bronze using the lost wax technique at Boyer Bronze in Livingston, Montana.
Last wax bronze, casting process.
Each sculpture begins as an original hand sculpted clay piece created by Elaine. From there, a rubber and plaster mold is made and hot wax is poured into the mold to create an exact wax replica. The wax version is then carefully refined by hand before being encased in a ceramic shell. When the shell is heated, the wax melts out, leaving behind a hollow cavity where molten bronze is poured at nearly 2,000 degrees.
Once cooled, the ceramic shell is broken away and the bronze sculpture goes through an extensive finishing process that includes metal chasing, welding, sandblasting, patina work, polishing, and sealing. Depending on the size and complexity of the sculpture, the entire lost wax bronze casting process can take anywhere from weeks to many months to complete.
This ancient process has been used for thousands of years and is still considered one of the most labor intensive and respected forms of sculpture casting in the world.
